This sample sort station is part of a high performance cell sorting system. The customer needed the component to be molded in a single piece rather than a fabrication because the part had to be easily cleaned with strong agents that might dissolve an adhesive. In addition, any gaps in the assembly of the part would allow foreign matter to collect there, even if it were thoroughly cleaned. In this particular case, molding the component in a single piece was even more difficult because of two 1-inch deep drain sumps that form an undercut on the interior of the part.
PMI designed and built the mold. We solved the drain sumps challenge by adding internal slides in the mold to accommodate the sumps.
